Biographical Information

Judith DeTar holds a doctorate in English from the University of Southern California. Broadly, her research interests include cultural studies, feminism, and gender studies. Her dissertation and current book project, Real Work: Nineteenth-Century Actors, Science of Mind, and the Novel examine the appearance in literature of a new understanding of common human behavior given the neuroscientific discoveries in the nineteenth-century of a deeply embodied mind, an understanding that helped undermine cultural constructions of race, class, and gender. While at USC she taught undergraduate honors literature and also served as senior assistant thesis editor for the Graduate School. She is senior editor of the American Indian Culture and Research Journal.
