Establishing Indigenous Peoples' Day in Los Angeles |
||||||
Dear AISC friends and family, As many of you know, on Friday, November 4, LA City Council will vote on Councilman Mitch O'Farrell's (Wyandotte) proposal to create Indigenous Peoples' Day in Los Angeles. The report on the issue prepared by the Human Resource Commission and the City/County Native American Indian Commission recommends eliminating Columbus Day and establishing Indigenous Peoples' Day in its place on the second Monday of October. Councilman O'Farrell publicly advocated strongly for this today, after having read the report and letters of support, as well as hearing testimony from the community. However, Councilman Buscaino spoke strongly against eliminating Columbus Day, as did several members of the Italian American Community. The vote on Friday is far from assured. So, if you care about the issue, please try to come to the Council Meeting at City Hall, Friday, Nov. 4, at 10:00 am. There will be an opportunity for the public to speak (probably in 1 minute slots). Further, if you feel very strongly about the issue, you might consider reaching out to the council members in advance of the Friday meeting. Lots of lobbying is going on from the pro-Columbus Day folks, so we should also make our voices heard. A list of the contact info for the City Council can be found here: https://www.lacity.org/your-government/elected-officials/city-council/council-directory Warm regards, |
