Ken Wade, Librarian

The American Indian Studies Center Library (AISCL) is an operating unit of the American Indian Studies Center (AISC) at UCLA. The library's mission is to collect and provide access to accurate and timely information about American Indian cultures in both historical and contemporary perspectives. The library is affiliated with the UCLA Library, and records of the AISC Library's holdings are available through the UCLA Library Catalog. The AISCL continues to maintain its local card catalog. As a focused collection, the American Indian Studies Center Library serves as an opportune place for those interested in American Indian cultures to use a special collection dedicated to their needs. For more information about the American Indian Studies Center Library please contact the library directly.

Research Assistance

The library is staffed by a professional librarian who is available to provide assistance in using the resources available in the American Indian Studies Center Library. Assistance is also provided accessing the collections of the UCLA Library and in the use of the many networked electronic resources available to the UCLA community.

Collections

The AISCL strives to create a collection of core published materials of importance to the study of American Indian peoples, primarily those residing within the borders of the United States. The AISCL collection ranges throughout a wide variety of relevant subjects, including history, law, social relations, expressive arts, language, literature, and folklore. Some items in the collection are found on the UCLA campus only at the American Indian Studies Center Library. The majority of the AISCL collection is housed in moveable compact shelving.

The serials received by the American Indian Studies Center Library include some tribally produced newspapers, American Indian newspapers with a national focus, as well as relevant magazines and journals. Many of these publications are not indexed and must be consulted directly to determine their contents. The library's access to American Indian newspapers is supplemented by full text resources available through the California Digital Library.

Other portions of the AISC Library's collections include a vertical file and a small collection of unpublished dissertations and theses. The contents of the vertical file may be accessed using a subject list. The portion of the dissertation collection not yet integrated into the library's general collection can be accessed through a finding guide.

Using the UCLA American Indian Studies Center Library

Everyone is welcome to use the collections in the AISC Library during the hours the library is open. Though appointments are not necessary, from time to time the library staff may need to be away from the library during normal operating hours. We suggest you call us before you come, especially if you are travelling to the AISC Library from off campus. Parking on campus costs $11.00 for the day, although several parking structures on campus have timed, metered parking spaces, which can cost less. When you arrive at a UCLA Parking Services kiosk, we suggest you request parking in Structure 3, if available, and ask for a campus map with Campbell Hall circled.

Circulation

The AISC Library is a non-circulating collection. Circulating copies of many items in the AISC Library are often available in one of the other units of the UCLA Library. For the circulation policies of the UCLA Library, see the Borrowing Privileges web pages.

Photocopying

Limited photocopying of library materials is available, and must be performed by library staff.
