UCLA College of Letters and Sciences
Division of Social Sciences

Dear Colleagues:

I am very pleased to announce that Benjamin Madley, Associate Professor of History, has agreed to serve as the Interim Chair of American Indian Studies effective July 1st, 2016. Professor Madley is an historian of Native America, the United States, and genocide in world history.

Let me take this opportunity to thank Professor Paul Kroskrity for chairing American Indian Studies over the last six years. The division of social sciences is especially indebted to Professor Kroskrity for his continuous dedication to the program, which he has chaired for a record number of twenty-six years. Throughout all of these years, Paul has continued to be a generous colleague, teacher, and scholar, effectively sharing his vast knowledge of American Indian languages and cultures among his students, colleagues, and readers.

I want to thank those of you who have provided me with suggestions and comments about potential candidates for this important position. Please join me in welcoming Professor Madley to this new leadership role.

Sincerely, Alessandro Duranti
Dean of Social Sciences
