Welcome Back! And news from the Director

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Welcome back to UCLA!

As many of you are aware, 2014-15 marks the end of my five year appointment as Director of the UCLA American Indian Studies Center. I write today to let you know that I have decided not to seek reappointment at the conclusion of my term.

Directing the Center has presented a host of amazing opportunities for me. In addition to increasing my intellectual breadth and depth in Native Studies, it has enabled me to work with an incredible cadre of faculty, staff, students, community members, tribal leaders, and others.  We have expanded the Center's reach internationally and raised the profile of an already outstanding research unit.  This experience stands unparalleled in my career thus far, and I am deeply grateful for the support and encouragement I have received during these last few years.

I believe the Center is well-positioned to recruit a new Director of the absolute highest caliber, and I am grateful for the support of Executive Vice Chancellor Scott Waugh and Vice Provost M. Belinda Tucker, who will provide the resources to launch a national search this fall for a new Center Director to lead upon my departure.

I will continue on as Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law and as Co-Director of the Native Nations Law and Policy Center.   I look forward to continuing to work with many of you in the coming years.

I am on sabbatical this fall, but I look forward to seeing everyone again in January.

Chi-megwetch (with deep thanks),

Angela R. Riley
Director, UCLA American Indian Studies Center
Professor of Law, UCLA School of Law
