MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
It is the season to give thanks, and we have much to be grateful for here at the Center. We deeply appreciate all of the support that you – our students, faculty, staff, community members, tribes, and friends -- have given us over the past year. We would not be able to continue this important work without you. As we head towards the year's end, we are delighted to welcome a new staff member to the Center, Nicole Sieminski (Tulalip Tribes), who will serve as our Research Specialist. (Scroll down to read more about Nicole.) We are also incredibly excited about our upcoming Race and Sovereignty Symposium, taking place March 31 – April 2, 2011. The Center is partnering with the Critical Race Studies faculty at the School of Law for a fabulous event that will bring in scholars from around the world to discuss their groundbreaking work in this area. We welcome the participation of our AIS students in the planning and staging of the event. We invite you to get involved, either by joining a committee or submitting a paper proposal. Finally, we have many events planned for the winter and spring quarters, so please keep checking our website calendar for the latest news. CALL FOR PROPOSALS - 5th Annual Symposium: Race and Sovereignty, March 31st to April 2nd, 2010Proposals may be for individual papers or whole sessions. All proposals should include the session or paper title, a 300-500 word abstract, the names, affiliations and CVs or resumes of all participants, and any audio-visual requests. Panels integrating practitioners or advocates, including both junior and senior scholars and/or including graduate or law students, are strongly encouraged. The deadline to submit proposals is January 7, 2011. Proposals should be submitted via email to crssymposium@law.ucla.edu. Decisions regarding the selection of proposals will be issued on a rolling basis. All decisions will be announced by February 1, 2011

Our Publications
Manager, Pamela Grieman, and the Publications Staff have been working hard on
developing a new look for the American Indian Culture and Research Journal.
Each
of the four cover photos printed in the journal this year represents a
different region in Native North America, as a visual reminder of the breadth
and scope of the journal's coverage. And, beginning with AICRJ volume 35,
number 1 (2011), the interior of the journal will feature a more contemporary
look as well. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the new look. You can leave
