MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends of the UCLA American Indian Studies Center,

Fall has arrived! We've been busy here at the Center commemorating Native American Heritage Month.  It's been wonderful to see many of you at these events.  Please scroll down for information on our remaining November activities.

We also have included photos and updates regarding some recent successful events, including the American Society of Ethnohistory Conference, which was held last month in Pasadena, our Open House, as well as the second meeting of the United Nations - Indigenous Peoples' Partnership at UN Headquarters in New York.

Finally, we are delighted to circulate the ad for a faculty search in American Indian Studies at UCLA, via the American Indian Studies Center. Please circulate widely.

As we near the holiday season, we express our thanks and gratitude to you, the Native community and friends of the Center, for your continued interest in and support of our work.

Megwetch (thank you),
Angela R. Riley
Director

An Information Update
photo_edit.jpg
The United Nations-Indigenous Peoples Partnership (UNIPP) held its second Policy Board meeting in New York on 27-28 October 2011 to review and approve proposals for UN country programs designed in partnership with indigenous peoples.

The Board saw the active participation of indigenous expert members Raja Devasish Roy (Co-Chair of UNIPP and Member of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues), Adelfo Regino Montes (Secretary of Indigenous Affairs, Government of Oaxaca, Mexico), and Angela Riley (Director of American Indian Studies Center and Professor of Law at the University of California Los Angeles, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, USA).

Indigenous expert members and senior United Nations representatives on the Board held detailed discussions on the content of the proposals, operational documents of the Partnership, and additional nominations of indigenous experts by the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Collectively they selected one additional indigenous expert to represent the Africa region and youth on the Board.
