UCLA American Indian Studies alumnus, Amanda Burke, successfully argues Pascua Yaqui Tribe Case

Today, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld tribal courts' consecutive sentencing authority to impose up to a one-year term of imprisonment for each discrete criminal violation committed by offenders in their jurisdictions. The American Indian Studies Center would like to highlight the efforts of one alumna who helped make this legal milestone possible. Amanda Sampson Burke, a graduate of UCLA’s School of Law and American Indian Studies Joint Degree Program, successfully briefed and argued the case for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. We congratulate Amanda on this impressive accomplishment and wish her continued success in the future. To read the opinion of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, please click here.
